Customs seize 33,680 conch shells ready for illegal exportation Featured

The Sri Lanka Customs has seized 33,680 conch shells that were prepared to be illegally exported to India.

The conch shell container had been prepared to be exported by a firm in Puttalam.

According to the Fisheries Management and Export Regulations on conch shells, the export of conch shells is banned except under the authority of an Export License.

It also prohibits the possession, purchase, display, sale, transport or export of conch shells less than 70mm in diameter.

The Customs said the exporter had submitted a statement to the Customs stating 20,000 conch shells would be exported to India while a valid export license obtained from the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources had been submitted to the Customs.

However, it was revealed during the Customs inspection that 33,680 conch shells were discovered, of which 21,480 conch shells were less than the 70mm diameter.

The Sri Lanka Customs is conducting further investigations.
