Pfizer to be used as 2nd dose for those who received AstraZeneca 1st dose

The Pfizer-BioNTech Covid vaccine will be used as the second dose for those who have received the first dose of AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine, stated State Minister of Pharmaceuticals Prof Channa Jayasumana today (23).

He stated that the WHO has approved the mix and match of AstraZeneca Covishield and Pfizer vaccines.

Meanwhile, a consignment of 78,000 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech will be received by Sri Lanka in the first week of July.

Data has been released by research authorities that the mix and match of AstraZeneca Covishield vaccines and the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines are effective, stated Prof. Neelika Malavige recently.

“Several countries have mixed and matched vaccines like AstraZeneca with Pfizer or Moderna effectively. How this is done is by receiving the first dose of AstraZeneca and the second dose from Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. Sri Lanka’s Health Ministry is also currently considering this,” she stated.

Prof. Malavige also stated that the possibility of mixing and matching Sputnik and Sinopharm vaccines with the AstraZeneca vaccine is also being tested worldwide but no data has been released as of yet.
