Sri Lanka marks Poson poya today Featured

The Sri Lankan Buddhist community marks Poson Poya today (24), to celebrate the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC.

It is considered the second most important Poya day in the year, after Vesak.

The focal point of this religious festival is Mihintale in Anuradhapura, where Arahath Mahinda Thero initially preached Buddhism to King Devanampiyatissa, who was the ruler of the country back then.

Although devotees throng to Anuradhapura, the ancient city of Kings during this season, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in islandwide travel restrictions during the festival period and religious programmes shifting towards online platforms.

The government has requested the public to observe religious practices at their residences due to the prevailing pandemic.
