He urged the "public not to take note of the statements made by people who have no knowledge of the value of the this unusual gem" found from Rathnapura.
He was responding to certain remarks made by some experts and gem traders who have said that the particular gem was not worth as much as claimed by it's owner and some government officials.
However, Weerasinghe says the gem is more suitable for a museum or for a collection of gems maintained by a rich person.
He has also suggested that the particular stone is more suitable to be used for study purposes.
