Teachers' demands can't be fulfilled at the present - Lokuge

Minister Gamini Lokuge says the Cabinet of Ministers reached a unanimous decision that wages of teachers and principals cannot be increased at the present.

Speaking to media after yesterday’s (02) Cabinet meeting, the minister said Rs. 56 billion is required in order to meet teachers’ salary demands and that it is impossible to spend such a sum in the present situation.

Noting this was an issue from the days of the previous government, the minister said that they are unable to solve it at the moment and these concerns can be addressed by the next Budget only.

He also stated that trade unions have a democratic right to hold protests, adding the government will not obstruct this right.
