Gota studies Trump, to enter politics! Featured

Former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa says he is yet to take a decision on whether to contest the next presidential polls, but does not rule out the possibility of entering active politics.

Addressing foreign correspondents at Galle Face Hotel in Colombo yesterday (27), he said, “I am not sure whether I'll be a good politician. The former president always says that I do not understand politics.”.

Gotabhaya said was willing to work with a leader whose policies were agreeable to him.

Hinting about his political entry, he said, “But Donald Trump has come from (business). We have to see.”

Asked if he considered the US President a model, he said, “Yes, I am looking at him and studying him.”

Refutes war crimes charges
Speaking further, the ex-defence secretary said he was opposed to a separate mechanism to investigate war crimes accusations and stressed the existing one was capable of addressing the issues.

He did not rule out that isolated incidents of crime, but said blaming the entire armed forces for that was unfair.

He also refuted the charge by former Army chief Sarath Fonseka that he had an Army intelligence group under him to target journalists, and said had such a group existed, Fonseka should take responsibility as the head of the Army at the time.

Asked if no proper investigation was carried out into murders and assaults of journalists, Gotabhaya maintained investigations were carried out and what the present government has uncovered was the same what had been found during those investigations.
