RTI Act : No information officers for some state institutions Featured

Some state institutions are yet to appoint information officers as per the Right To Information Act, which is a violation of the people’s right to information, says RTI commission member S.G. Punchihewa.

Pursuant to the implementation of the RTI, there have been a large number of requests for information from state institutions.

However, some of these institutions have refused to grant the information sought, said Punchihewa.

Especially, the police department is yet to appoint an information officer, he says.

The commission will inform the Media Ministry to ensure that information officers are appointed to all state institutions, he says.

He adds that the armed forces too, have been asked to supply information, mainly with regard to persons who went missing during the war.
