Being notified of this situation, the President had requested Dr. Gunasena to delay his resignation by another month.
The Aruna newspaper had reported that due to this situation, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has been compelled to resign from his post as Health Minister.
However, it is reported that no emergency purchases have been made by the Pharmaceutical Corporation since April 2020 after Dr. Prasanna Gunasena assumed office as its chairman.
Following this decision, the government has been able to save around 1140 million rupees.
It is said that Rs. 2,600 million has been saved in the year 2020 due to the importation of all cancer drugs under their pharmaceutical name which was imported under their brand names prior to 2020.
It is reported that Dr. Prasanna has not received any salary from the Pharmaceutical Corporation during his tenure and not received any allowance from the tender boards either. It is said that he has saved more than five million rupees for the corporation by not receiving salaries and allowances.
He has taken steps to donate the money to the Employees' Welfare Fund.
However, four days ago, Dr. Rukshan Bellana, Chairman of the Government Medical Officers' Forum, said at a press conference that the only authority in the Sri Lankan health sector was the Cabinet Minister and not other persons, and that the name of the Chairman of the State Pharmaceutical Corporation could be in the Pandora papers next time.
