Petition calls to postpone GCE A/L by 20 weeks

A Writ Petition was filed in the Court of Appeal today (28) urging to postpone the GCE Advanced Level examination by 20 weeks.

The petition was filed by General Secretary of Vinivida Peramuna - Attorney-At-Law Nagananda Kodithuwakku.

The 2021 GCE Advanced Level examination is scheduled to start on Feb. 07.

He pointed out that schools across the country had been closed for a considerable period of time due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which had a deep impact on education as schools were unable to complete syllabi properly.

Therefore, the National Institute of Education has recommended to the government to give the students an additional period of 20 weeks before the exam commenced, which had been rejected by the Ministry of Education and its Secretary, he said.

Accordingly, the petitioner requests that the schedule issued by the Commissioner General of Examinations be revoked and an order be issued to give students 20 weeks before the examination.

The Minister of Education, the Commissioner General of Examinations and the Director of the National Institute of Education have been named as respondents in this petition.
