Excise Dept. dispute over circular Featured

The Excise Department is experiencing an internal dispute over a circular issued by its commissioner dated 08 March 2017.

It asks assistant excise commissioners to send to the head office the liquor, seized during raids and currently being stored at department owned warehouses across the country.

The circular asks that the seized liquor be sent to Colombo by March 27.

So far, what has happened was workers at the warehouses buying the liquor at very low prices and selling it at the market at a big profit, which is a violation of the excise act.

Some in the department allege the commissioner is planning to get the seized liquor to be sold to a liquor company with links to a government minister.
