He said this while addressing the Colombo District Convention of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Colombo District Convention was held at the Viharamahadevi Park yesterday (10) afternoon under the theme 'People's Wish for Freedom'.
Expressing his views at this convention, former President Maithripala Sirisena said, “State expenditure needs to be reduced. Recently two ministers were removed and right after that two more were appointed.”
“Now there are many notions about national governments. But no matter what national government comes to power, it is imperative to reduce the cabinet numbers, primarily on the fundamental issue of reducing public spending. Today there are three state ministers in one ministry and some have four. There is a tug-of-war and nothing gets done.”
“We will strengthen the 11 party collective but will not stop at that. It could increase to 15 or 20 parties. We will form a broad people's force in this country by uniting all. However, we will not discuss who is the leader, the president, prime minister etc.”
Addressing the Convention Senior Deputy Leader of the SLFP Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said, “We met with the President and told him of what had happened. He said he liked the SLFP and urged us to help him in carrying out his future undertakings. He also praised the SLFP for being the only party that presented important suggestions for the future of the country from among all other parties that had held discussions with the President.”
