Govt. to show its ‘backbone’ by appointing Fonseka to new role Featured

At yesterday’s (25) cabinet meeting, president Maithripala Sirsiena suggested to Sarath Fonseka to relinquish his ministerial portfolio and take up the position of Army commander or chief of defence staff and ‘create discipline in the country’, said cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne.

Senaratne told the media today that Fonseka would be the best person to deal with the strikes and protests by politically-motivated trade unions bent on inconveniencing the public and unsettling the government.

The responsibilities to be given to Fonseka are under discussion, said the cabinet spokesman, adding that the ex-Army chief has agreed to the suggestion.

When asked as to how Fonseka would control any strike or protest, Senaratne said that he would deal with it beautifully and that would be seen then.

Referring to allegations by the public sometimes that the government was without a ‘backbone’, the cabinet spokesman said the suggestion to appoint Fonseka would answer that.

He noted that the government had always listened to reasonable demands by the trade unions, and gave as an example the strike by petroleum TUs as one that was one with political intentions.

Meanwhile, Fonseka has told the media that he was prepared to accept a new role connected to the military while continuing as a cabinet minister.
