an’t give houses the way Marikkar wants - Champika Featured

Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka says he is not prepared to grant houses built by the Urban Development Authority according to the way Colombo district MP S.M. Marikkar wants it to be.

Ranawaka is commenting on a claim by the MP that a Rs. 196 million fraud had taken place in the granting of houses by the UDA to those who were rendered homeless following the Meethotamulla garbage dump collapse.

He says the UDA built the houses, originally intended for those who lost their homes due to the Kelani Valley project, not from state funding, but from Rs. 300 million obtained from the People’s Bank at a 14 per cent interest.

Ranawaka said 98 houses, each costing Rs. 3.98 million, were given to the Meethotamulla tragedy victims.

It is true these houses were estimated for the NHDA and the Railways Department at Rs.  two million each, because of the commercial agreements the UDA is having with them, as both develop the UDA-owned land to give them high value, said the minister.

He said he has explained this to Marikkar in front of the president, but he continues to lie to the media.
