Lets not fight over Deputy Speaker, elect a female MP - RW tells MPs

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has started discussions with political parties, requesting them not to fight over the Deputy Speaker position and to nominate a female MP whose selection will be unanimous to the post, the Prime Minister's Office said.

Wickremesinghe informed the MPs that this was not the time to be divided and fight over such positions and requested a female MP the post to strengthen the female representation in Parliament.

Parliament will appoint a deputy speaker when it convenes on May 17.
