Australia’s Federal Election currently underway Featured

Millions of Australians are heading to the polls today for the country’s first election since 2019.

It sees Prime Minister Scott Morrison go up against one of the country’s longest serving politicians, Labor Leader Anthony Albanese.

The Australian election is of significance for Sri Lankans as three individuals of Lankan origin are contesting.

All three are competing for the state of Victoria.

Ranj Perera and Virosh Perera are contesting from the Liberal Party while Cassandra Fernando is contesting from the Labor Party.

Ranj Perera and Cassandra Fernando are vying for the Holt seat in Melbourne while Virosh Perera is the candidate for Scullin.

The rising cost of living and climate change have shaped up as two key issues for voters.

But the election has largely been framed as a referendum on the leaders’ characters.

Opinion polls suggest Labor will win by a narrow majority this time around.

However, the polls were wildly inaccurate in the last election.

Voting began at 8am local time and will end at 6pm.

Over 17 million voters have registered with over seven million individuals had cast their postal votes and pre-votes by yesterday.

The Liberal–National Coalition, led by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, is running for office for the fourth time in a row.
