Norochcholai partially closedown – Signs of power cuts extending

The Norochcholai power plant will be partially closed from 12 midnight tomorrow (17), the Ceylon Electrical Engineers Association said.

Its joint secretary Eranga Kudahewa said the plant would have to be shut down for 75 days.

The Ceylon Electrical Engineers also warned that the power cuts could be further extended due to the Norochcholai power plant being shut down.

The Joint Secretary pointed out that the Ceylon Electricity Board did not have the funds to import spare parts for the power plants and that the Lakvijaya Coal Power Plant will require about $ 640 million to import coal after next year to generate electricity. However, he said that they had no idea on how they would find the required funds, adding that if the funds cannot be obtained, the CEB would have to depend entirely on diesel power generation, failing which the duration of power cuts would definitely have to be increased.
