VCs to decide on closing universities - UGC

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has stated that all Vice Chancellors have been given the right to decide whether or not universities will remain open, in the face of the present crisis.

The fuel and gas crisis has had a large impact on the university system already and it has become a challenge to keep universities open, 'Lankadeepa' reports, quoting a higher official of the UGC.

Yesterday (18), the University of Peradeniya announced that the campus would be closed in this backdrop.

Closure, not the solution - FUTA

However, the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) had said in a press conference yesterday (18) that the closure of universities is not the answer to the crisis, and will only further disrupt education.

FUTA Chairman - Prof. Shyama Banneheka had stated that the education of children in the country has been severely disrupted due to the recent pandemic, and the time which was followed by the pandemic.

Noting that closure of universities or schools is not the answer to the country’s issues, Prof. Banneheka has urged the Government not to allow the education of children in this country to be further disrupted due to the economic and the political crisis.
