20 deaths already due to lack of anti-venom serum Featured

President of the All Ceylon Government Medical Officers' Association (ACGMOA) - Dr. Gishantha Dassanayake has stated that 20 people have died recently due to the shortage of anti-venom serum at hospitals.

He says there will be a severe shortage of essential medicines in the hospital system within the next three weeks.

The Chairman said that the replacement drugs currently being used for certain drugs will also be in shortage during this time.

Mr. Dasanayake said that when a hospital orders drugs from medicine stocks, only 20% is given at the moment while this too will likely diminish in the next few days.

At present, it is reported that medicines are given only to selected patients from hospitals and that young patients are given priority over older patients.

There is also a shortage of antibiotics, syrups for young children and painkiller gels used for knee pain.

However, Health minister - Keheliya Rambukwella recently said that there is no uncontrollable shortage of essential drugs despite various opinions in the health sector.
