Sri Lanka won the 5-match ODI series in a thrilling match last Monday (21).
The movement calling to wear the predominantly Aussie team colour is to express gratitude for the Australian team, who had visited the island despite the current situation in Sri Lanka.
Posts on social media are also encouraging spectators to carry placards expressing thanks to the Australian side for visiting Sri Lanka.
The tour was vital for Sri Lanka in more ways than one, as the country grapples with a massive economic crisis and political instability.
Earlier this month, touring Australian cricketers Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc have issued video messages raising awareness of Sri Lanka’s economic crisis.
They had joined hands with the United Nations team in Sri Lanka and non-governmental organizations that launched a joint Humanitarian Needs and Priorities (HNP) Plan, calling for US$47.2 million in humanitarian aid to provide life-saving assistance to Sri Lanka over a four-month period from June to September.
Earlier, Australian cricketers had raised ethical concerns about touring Sri Lanka amid such a crisis but not only ended up supporting the decision of the officials to proceed with the tour, but also brought in one of the finest lineups of the side.
The following are several social media posts urging spectators to wear Aussie colours.
