1,000 children to enter monkhood Featured

One thousand children are entering monkhood to mark international Vesak festival to be hosted by Sri Lanka, and with the aim of furthering Theravada Buddhism, said Buddha Sasana minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe.

He has told BBC Sinhala Service that 75 children became monks at Dammulla Sri Suddamma Vihara in Hambantota, followed by 215 more at Ruwanweli Stupa in Anuradhapura.

The minister said Buddhism required more monks, a need the government has come to understand, and this will address the issue.

‘Sathhanda’ has reported that parents will be given a house for a child given to Sasana, on approval for a proposal submitted by housing minister Sajith Premadasa.

In addition, there will be a foster scheme for the unordained monks for the duration of their education, while parents will also be entitled to a free pilgrimage to India and a privilege card.
