Cabinet to convene today as usual

President Maithripala Sirisena has said he will hold the usual weekly cabinet meeting today (16), despite earlier stating he will not hold any more cabinet meetings until a cabinet reshuffle takes place.

Sources from the government say that the President has changed his mind after the Prime minister has agreed to hold a cabinet reshuffle soon after the latter's return from China.

Accordingly, the Presidential secretariat has formally informed the Cabinet to convene today, reports add.

New Cabinet
Although the date and time of the next meeting is usually announced before the end of a cabinet meeting, it was not done so during the last cabinet meeting held on May 09.

If the reshuffle takes place as anticipated, the maiden meeting of the new Cabinet will take place on May 23.
