Samanera institute to nurture Sasana Featured

A special institutional arrangement named Samanera institute is to be implemented for novice monks on a new plan by Buddha Sasana Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe.

More than 600 Buddhist temples have been closed due to an inadequate number of monks.

Therefore, state patronage is given to a programme for 1,000 children to enter monk-hood in order to nurture the Sasana.

The new entrants will be given a residential training for several days.

Also, housing minister Sajith Premadasa received cabinet approval to provide a house for every family that contributes a child to Sasana.

A generation of monks that safeguards Dhamma

Personal secretary to the minister, Richard Daneppuliarachchi said shortcomings in Pirivena education would also be rectified.

They include the inclusion of Pali, Sanskrit, English and other subjects, he said, with the aim of creating a generation of monks that safeguards Dhamma.
