Won't accept any ministry other than finance - Ravi Featured

The Cabinet reshuffle is expected to take place tomorrow (22) and Minister Ravi Karunanayake has said that he will not accept any other ministerial portfolio other than Finance Minister.

He had made this comment when contacted by ‘Lanka News Web’.

Commenting further on the topic, Karunanayake had said, “I have complete faith in the President and Prime Minister and I have done my best during my two years in office as the Finance Minister. In 2015, when we took over the Treasury was completely empty.

However, despite challenges, I never allowed the trust placed in me be tarnished. If I have made any mistake, the President and Prime Minister have every right to correct me at any time. I have acted impartially and in a balanced manner in terms of dealing with the requirements of the International monitory organisations and the country’s requirements,” he said.

“The reason that ‘The Banker’ magazine chose me as the best Finance Minister of the world was because of my strategies…., he said.

‘Prior attempt to oust me’

“This is not the first time my ministry has come under cuts. Fifty of the institutions that were under the Finance Ministry were removed and placed under the Ministry of Public Enterprise Development. I was only left in charge of the Treasury and a few other affiliated institutions.

Yet I kept silent for the sake of the future of the good governance. If the President had taken this decision, the Prime Minister has the power to prevent it. That is the core factor of the good governance regime initial agreement.

Both the President and Prime Minster know how much I have done and the sacrifices I have made to bring this government to power.

Finally all I have to say is that if I am removed from my current position as the Finance Minister, I will not accept any other portfolio, but will remain in the party as a back bencher,” he said.
