Uncollected garbage piled up in Colombo city Featured

A very bad odour is emanating from the heaps of garbage piled up uncollected in the Colombo city for several days now.

City residents allege motorcyclists coming from outside the city throw bags of garbage by the roadsides.

Meanwhile, the Colombo Municipal Council says disposal has become problematic, as the garbage has not been sorted when dumped.

Health authorities warn of outbreak of dengue and other diseases due to the garbage piled up in the city.

Declare a disaster situation

As a temporary solution, health minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has proposed to president Maithripala Sirisena that a disaster situation be declared for a two-week period and members of the armed forces and the police deployed for garbage removal.

Senaratne said at a discussion with the private sector on an anti-mosquito programme that stringent legislation should be enacted for the management of garbage.

He noted that during the previous regime, the then defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse had deployed the military’s members for garbage management.

The presidential task force on dengue prevention should be summoned for an emergency meeting to discuss the matter and local government bodies educated on the need for garbage management, the minister said.

The public encouraged to dispose of the garbage collected at households, he added.
