Sudarshana Gunewardene is a lawyer by profession. He is a co founder and the Executive Director of Rights Now Collective for Democracy, a Sri Lankan Civil Society Organization working for the promotion of democratization, national reconciliation and human rights. Prior to that he headed the Movement for the Defense of Democratic Rights in Sri Lanka. He is also a co convener of the Platform for Freedom, a coalition of Civil Society Organzations campaigning for broader democratic rights. and secretary of the Movement for Free and Fair Elections (MFFE), a local movement working for electoral law reform.
Sudarshana Gunewardene is appointed as an advisor to the Prime Minister on Non Governmental Organizations in 2015. He is also appointed an advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs on National Human Rights Action Plan in 2016. He has been also been appointed as the Chairperson of the Zonal Task Force (Western Province) by the Consultation Task Force on Reconciliation Mechanisms.
Sudarshana Gunewardene was invited as a visitor by the German Federal Government in 2016 September to study the Protection of Minorities in Germany. In 2014, he has been invited by the US Federal Government to participate for their International Visitor Leadership Programme on Strengthening Civil Society. He has served as a UN volunteer in East Timor in 1999 and in Kosovo in 2000.
Sudarshana Gunewardene is a writer and media person as well. He is the managing editor of the 'Samabima' publications, which engaged in building local capacities on national processes related to democratisation, nations reconciliation and human rights promotion. Since 2015, he works as a free-lance political analyst and talk show host on the National Television, Rupavahini.
He is also hosting TV talk shows at Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation.
