Steps underway to disbar Lakshan Dias Featured

Steps are underway to disbar Lakshan Dias for having claimed publicly that 166 Christian religious places have been attacked, says a top official at the Ministry of Justice and Buddha Sasana.

Subject minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe wanted the lawyer to tender a public apology within 24 hours over his claim, or face disbarment.

The official said documents were being drafted to be sent to the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and the attorney general, seeking their advice on the possibility of taking legal action against Dias.

Rajapakshe issued the warning to him at the opening of a new court complex at Mankulam in Kilinochchi on June 17.

However, religious, civil society organizations and leftist leaders have condemned government authorities for hunting down those who expose attacks against Christian and Muslim interests and racist attacks, instead of arresting the attackers.
