1.2 m landmines removed so far Featured

Sri Lanka will be made a country free of landmines by 2020, says rehabilitation and resettlement minister D.M. Swaminathan.

He says an area of around 26 square kilometers remains to be demined in the north and the east.

The minister was addressing a function where Batticaloa district was declared free of landmines.

According to him, more than 1.2 million land mines laid during the war have been removed so far.

The government has spent Rs. 4,000 million for demining activities, while foreign demining agencies have contributed as much as Rs. 10,000 million.

The US, Japan, Canada, England, Australia, India, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, China and Russia are assisting in this task.
