Mangala calls on Asgiriya Mahanayake

Finance minister Mangala Samaraweera called on Mahanayake of Asgiriya Chapter Most Ven. Warakagoda Gnanaratana Thera in Kandy yesterday (24).

Accompanying him in the visit was development strategy and international trade minister Malik Samarawickrama.

Just recently, the Karaka Sangha Sabha of the Asgiriya chapter issued a statement, saying it totally disapproves of the impulsive conduct and expressive manner of Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera, but stressing that it does not reject the concerns he has raised.

The statement issued a warning to the government, and condemned the so-called leftist politicians and society activists for criticizing Buddhist monks without looking into the veracity of what they say.

It accused the government of ignoring racist remarks by certain politicians while trying to silence the monks who respond to those remarks, and said the government should take responsibility if the country faces unrest in the future.

The statement said attempts to change the existing laws will lead to social conflicts, and notes any shortcoming in the law should be discussed and decided on.

It alleged a land-grabbing in state reserves in the name of national reconciliation and a destruction of artifacts in the north-east, and urged the government to stop them.
