It will begin from Colombo University, and related discussions took place in May through a parliamentary committee on education, headed by Ashu Marasinghe.
MP Marasinghe said the university’s administration and finances would be run independently, while admissions would continue under the UGC’s supervision.
No decision has yet been taken if this will apply for Peradeniya University as well.
Commenting on this, JVP MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the government’s aim was to sell courses of the Colombo University.
This will also allow political interference in the university administration, he said.
The matter was discussed by COPE at a meeting on July 04, also attended by representatives of the UGC and Colombo University.
