Website operations successful: ‘Welikada killings’ committee report to CID! Featured

The investigation report of the Commission which was appointed by the current government to probe the mass murders that took place at the Welikada Prison in 2012, was yesterday (14), handed over to the CID by the government, two years after it was given to them by the Commission.

Several websites including Sri Lanka Mirror and E news had revealed yesterday that the Commission report which had been handed over two years ago to the IGP and the AG had not been handed over to the CID.

This Commission report which consists of over 1000 pages of evidence, is of vital importance in initiating legal action against those responsible for the crime.

Subsequent to the current government being appointed, Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe appointed a three member committee on November 9,2012 to investigate the Welikada prison riot and the events that led to the incidents. The committee comprised of retired High Court Judge Wimal Nambuwasam as Chairman, retired Senior DIG Ashoka Wijetillake and retired Administrative Officer, Attorney S.K. Liyanage.  

The committee having comprehensively investigated the incidents regarding the incident had compiled a report consisting of all the evidence and the Chairman retired High Court Judge Wimal Nambuwasam and the committee together with the Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe, had handed over the report to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on June 09, 2015.

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Wijayadasa Rajapakshe told Sri Lanka Mirror  yesterday (14) that the Prime Minister had handed over copies of the report to the AG and the then IG Illangakoon for necessary action.
