3rd school term to be held in 3 phases

The Ministry of Education says December 02 (Friday) will be a holiday for all government and government-approved private schools in the country after the second term of schools drew to an end today (01).

The third term is scheduled to commence next Monday (Dec. 05).

Meanwhile, the third term of schools will be split into three phases as follows :

Sinhala and Tamil schools
• First phase: From December 05, 2022 (Monday) to December 22, 2022 (Thursday) – Christmas holidays from December 23, 2022 to January 01, 2023
• Second phase: From January 02, 2023 (Monday) to January 20, 2023 (Friday) – Holidays from January 21, 2023 to February 19, 2023
• Third phase: From February 20, 2023 (Monday) to March 24, 2023 (Friday)

Muslim schools
• First phase: From December 05, 2022 (Monday) to December 22, 2022 (Thursday) – Christmas holidays from December 23, 2022 to January 01, 2023
• Second phase: From January 02, 2023 (Monday) to February 15, 2023 (Wednesday) – Holidays from February 16, 2023 to February 28, 2023
• Third phase: From March 01, 2023 (Wednesday) to March 21, 2023 (Tuesday)

Tense situation at Galle Face as illegal stalls removed

A tense situation arose yesterday (July 04) when officials from Sri Lanka Port Management and Consultancy Services (Private) Ltd., accompanied by police officers, arrived to remove unauthorized stalls at Galle Face, Colombo.

The removal was part of an effort to ensure that trading activities in the area are conducted safely and with the necessary approval from public health inspectors.

However, traders who have been operating in the area for some time strongly opposed the decision.

The traders explained that they had been trading at this location for some time, but the officials were preparing to remove themselves from the location, saying that they needed to obtain certificates from public health inspectors.

Following discussions at the site, officials informed the traders that they would be permitted to continue their business until this Sunday.

Showers expected in several areas today

The Meteorology Department says that several spells of showers will occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces and in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Galle, and Matara districts today (July 05).

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the afternoon or night.

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Kaikawala bridge on Hunnasgiriya – Meemure road, closed

The Hunnasgiriya-Meemure road has been temporarily closed near the Kaikawala bridge.

Authorities say that vehicle movement over the bridge has been suspended due to a sudden structural issue that arose during renovation work being carried out by the Road Development Authority.

In this backdrop, Kandy District Secretary Indika Udawatte has urged the public to refrain from visiting Meemure for recreational trips or other purposes until further notice.
