Four individuals including two police officers attached to the same police station in the Moneragala area as well as a mother and her daughter have reportedly been killed in separate shooting incidents this morning (04), which are believed to be interconnected.

The shooting incidents have reportedly taken place in the Moneragala, Namal Oya and Inginiyagala areas.

The deceased police officers were attached to the Karandugala Police Station in Moneragala, the Police Media Division said.

Initially it was reported that a 33-year-old policeman has been shot dead at his residence in the Namal Oya area of Ampara early this morning (Aug 04).

Police said that an unidentified assailant who arrived at the deceased police constable’s house at around 02.45 a.m. today had shot at him and fled the scene.

Furthermore, police revealed that a 54-year-old woman and her 17-year-old daughter had also been shot dead at the Nelliadda area in Inginiyagala.

In a separate incident, another policeman attached to the same police station as the deceased officer had taken his own life by shooting himself to death using his service firearm inside the Karandugala Police Station today.

However, police suspect that the 42-year-old police constable who had committed suicide inside the police station had carried out both the previous shootings, which killed the 33-year-old cop and the two females, before taking his own life.

Man sentenced to 60 years for abusing brother’s preschool daughter

The Colombo High Court Judge, R.S.S Sapuwidana sentenced a 68 year old man to 60 years of rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty of sexually abusing his own brother’s preschool daughter over a period of more than two months.

The High Court Judge imposed an additional fine of Rs. 30,000 on the accused and also ordered him to pay Rs. 1 million in compensation to the victim.

The judge emphasised the inhumanity and cruelty of the crime, saying, “This is not merely an offense against a child but an act that shocks the conscience of humanity.”

Evidence revealed that the child, too young to fully understand what was happening, had once told her mother, “Amma, don’t let that ‘holman bappa’ come to our house again,” a statement later confirmed through witness testimony.

The prosecution revealed that the accused had entered the child’s home and also lured the child to his own residence during times when no one was present and committed the offense. Thereafter, he had threatened the child, warning her not to disclose the incident to anyone and that if she did, it would happen again. As a result of this intimidation, the child had been subjected to repeated abuse over a period of time.

Considering all the evidence, the High Court Judge held that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubts.
