Filling teacher vacancies at a standstill Featured

A tug-of-war by the provincial councils that continue to refuse a line ministry request has resulted in a complete standstill to the filling of teacher vacancies, ‘Rivira’ reports quoting the Education Ministry.

Cabinet approval was granted on 03 March 2016 to recruit GCE A/L qualified and diploma holders to fill teacher vacancies from grade six to grade 11.

Accordingly, the ministry sought details of the existing vacancies, and excepting the north central province, all other PCs sent the details.

When the ministry contacted the PCs in 2017, only the central province gave its consent.

Teacher vacancies cannot be filled due to this lack of cooperation by the PCs, which is taking place with the knowledge of the political authorities and the public services commissions in the provinces, the ministry adds.
