About 50 school buildings have collapsed in Galle and Matara Districts in the past six weeks, it was reported.

Southern Province Education Secretary Ranjith Yapa said that the children who were studying in these buildings and the teachers have been sent to other schools.

Some of the collapsed buildings should be completely removed while some of them can be restored, he said.

The secretary said that funds will be allocated for the construction of new buildings under World Bank assistance.

He also said that a new building can be constructed within two months.

The secretary said that some of the collapsed buildings are 50 or 60 years old.

“New buildings have been built under several projects implemented by the Ministry of Education in the past, but no attention has been paid to repairing these buildings,” he said.
