28 arrested at Hambantota protest

Police fired teargas and water cannons and also arrested 28 persons when it moved into disperse a protest in Hambantota today (06) against the long-term leasing of Mattala airport to India.

They were taken on a charge of unruly conduct, as three policemen sustained injuries during the demonstration organized by the joint opposition.

It took place despite a court order banning protests within the area coming under the jurisdiction of the Hambantota court.

Among the 2,000-odd participants were Chamal Rajapaksa, G.L. Peiris, Namal Rajapaksa, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena and Arundika Fernando.

Starting from near the beach park in the town, the protest march proceeded for around three km along old Tangalle road and converged on the Indian consulate.

There was strong police presence, and a few of the protestors were allowed to handover a petition to the consulate.

As they tried to break up the barricades, police fired teargas and water cannons and dispersed the protestors.
