There have been strong criticisms against the imposition of a Rs. 1,000 ban on politicians who had failed to declare their assets and liabilities.
The related court cases themselves had cost more than the fine imposed.
The existing punishment also includes a prison term not exceeding one year.
Former deputy minister Sarana Gunawardena and ex-MP Duminda Silva pleaded guilty to this charge and were fined a mere Rs. 2,000 (for two years) Rs. 3,000 (for three years) respectively.
At their meeting yesterday (10), ministers approved a proposal by justice minister Thalatha Athukorale to instruct the legal draftsman to formulate laws to raise the fine to Rs. 100,000.
