No intention of becoming PM by cutting throat of my leader - Mangala Featured

Finance and media minister Mangala Samaraweera says he has no intention of accepting a premiership that will be given him by cutting the throat of the incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is the leader of his party.

Samaraweera stresses that he has never rebelled against the leadership during his political life, but that his politics involved reaching consensus through discussion within the party over any ideological matter or problem.

The minister made these comments to 'Sri Lanka Mirror' when asked about media reports that Karu Jayasuriya, Sajith Premadasa or him would be named to be a caretaker prime minister in the event Wickremsinghe resigns following a request by the president, if he is to testify before the commission investigating the bond matter.

Samaraweera refuted a claim by certain media that the president had summoned Kabir Hashim, Malik Samarawickrema and him and told them that Wickremesinghe should step down.

At no time, the president made such a request, said Samaraweera.

Also rejecting a media claim that the president and the premier are having an animosity, he said the two met once or twice a week to have amicable discussions on affairs of the government.

Several social media sites maintained by a senior UNP figure have claimed that that person has told party backbenchers in the past few weeks that Samaraweera was in the forefront of a conspiracy by a party leader to evict Wickremesinghe from the premiership and succeed him.

In view of this situation, the premier has instructed leading party figures to immediately halt conspiracies to form gang within the party, and not to take part in such meetings.
