Over 200 personnel for Mahinda, Chandrika security

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said 154 security personnel had been assigned for the security of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and 61 security personnel for former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge.

He said adequate security had been provided for their security detail and neither had made a request for further security. However, if the intelligence units notify that further security was required for either of the two former leaders, additional security could be provided.

The Prime Minister made this observation in reply to a question raised by Joint Opposition Parliamentary Group Leader Dinesh Gunawardena under standing orders 23(2) in Parliament today.

The MP requested for additional security personnel, vehicles and other requirements to the former President during the upcoming election season reiterating the threats to his life. He requested the Government to reinstate the number of security personnel reduced from former President Rajapaksa’s security contingent during the election period.
