Many facebook accounts suspended! Featured

The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team reports receiving more than 3,400 complaints against facebook and other social media by November this year.

Its chief engineer Roshan Chandragupta has told BBC Sinhala Service that 80 per cent of the complaints related to fake fb accounts.

According to him, 2,200 complaints were received in 2016 against social media.

Chandragupta noted that most were unaware that fb has the facility within itself to lodge complaints against fake accounts.

Subsequent to inquiry, fb will remove those fake accounts, he said.

He said that fake fb accounts could be avoided by sharing the pictures posted among friends only and not accepting friend requests from strangers.

The SLCERT has received many complaints seeking removal of fake fb pages in the names of politicians, actors and sports personnel.

One such complaint was by ex-cricketer Aravinda de Silva, who was assisted by removing the fake accounts in his name.

Chandragupta said they also received complaints against false news circulated via social media.

The SLCERT cannot determine if a particular news is correct or not, and it will advise the complainants about the action that could be taken as per fb regulations, he said.

Police said following clashes at Gintota recently that legal action would be taken against the fabrication of news to provoke clashes among communities.

Also, there have been complaints about cheating money with promises via fb of various prizes.

In comparison, Twitter and Instagram have received only a few complaints, mainly about fake accounts.
