Will leave office after punishing the corrupt - president Featured

Answering his critics who want him to say when he will leave the presidency, Maithripala Sirisena stresses that he will relinquish office only after making sure that corrupt politicians are punished.

He made the remark during a speech at a UPFA propaganda rally in Kosgama this afternoon (18).

The president also said that he was prepared even to take to the streets with the people for a populist journey against corruption and fraud.

He said that after the mini-polls on February 10, an anti-corruption national movement would be launched together with all politicians who loved the country.

He invited religious leaders, intellectuals and patriots to become involved in that movement, irrespective of political differences.

The president said he would not miss the work that should be done for the country and the nation, adding that a generation of exemplary politicians should be created to go forward in that journey.

Why turn back?

Responding to calls by former rulers to the people to turn back to rectify the mistake they did on 08 January 2015, he said what they wanted was to re-create an era of corrupt governance, mass murders and repression of the media.

The people are not prepared to turn back, he stressed, as they did not want to darken their future by the former powers whose blemished record remained unforgotten by the outside world.
