The coastal area from Marawila to Kalpitiya is especially at risk.

Recently, the authorities pumped sand into the sea to restore the damage, but it has not succeeded.

One of the islets, Palliyawatte, had only 50 families remaining, out of around 3,000 families that had lived there.

Around 20 houses in the island were washed away to sea in August 2015.
