NCE to oversee all economic and finance matters

Sri Lanka’s National Economic Council (NCE) appointed by the president in September 2017 will be reviewing all economic and finance related matters including development projects and infrastructure development proposals.

NEC will be an advisory body on economic affairs and policy in the country to further strengthen policy consistency in Government, Secretary General of NCE Prof.Lalith Samarakoon said at a media conference today.

This new ten member body chaired by President Maithripala Sirisena will be the last post to pass through for economic proposals before its submission for the approval of the cabinet of ministers’ and it is above to pass the Cabinet Committee on Economic Management (CCEM) which is chaired by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Council will become a powerful oversight body for economic management after it is strengthened by a staff of policy specialists in various fields whom will be recruited within the next two months and it will be housed at the World Trade Centre, he said.

The NEC was set up with the approval of the cabinet and it will obtain the services of experts in the fields of economics, planning, trade and investment etc to review economic development proposals and policies, he pointed out.
