The Joint Opposition (JO) is to voice their disapproval tomorrow (19) over Speaker Karu Jayasuriya being dragged into political games, leader of the JO - Dinesh Gunawardena says.
The Speaker was summoned today by the president for a discussion with prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
MP Gunawardena added that details of this discussion should be revealed in parliament tomorrow (19).
The Speaker should not have been dragged to such political conspiracies, he further said.
Why did the Speaker go?
After being unable to contact the Speaker himself, we contacted one of his spokespersons. Responding to our queries, the spokesperson said that the Speaker had attended the meeting after religious leaders and civil activists urged him to intervene and solve the prevailing crisis, which was plunging the country into anarchy and chaos.
Waiting for the runner-up
Meanwhile, speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror', former minister Basil Rajapaksa said that the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has already emerged as the winner and the tussle for the premiership would determine only the runner-up.
He added that he too, is waiting to see who would emerge as the runner-up.
If the president retains Ranil as PM, those who crossed over will go to Ranil... If Nimal Siripala de Silva is made PM, those who are with Ranil with join Nimal, Mr. Rajapaksa further said.
