Call for school sports meets to be held during 2nd term Featured

Lengthy exposure to the sun during sports activities are harmful to schoolchildren, with a couple of deaths already taking place due to heat waves, say parents.

The sun remains closest to the Earth in the first three months of the year, when most schools hold their sports meets, requiring long hours of training under the scorching heat.

Considering all these, parents want the school sports meets to be held during the second instead of the first.

Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror,' Ceylon Teachers Union secretary Joseph Stalin said he agreed with the suggestion.

It is better to hold the sports meets in the second term, during which the weather is more suited for outdoor activities, he said.

Attempts to reach sports minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam for a comment failed.
