Cabinet remains divided over glyphosate ban! Featured

The cabinet is due to decide at its next meeting if the ban on glyphosate will continue, over which its members remain divided.

An expert recommendation that glyphosate is not directly linked to chronic kidney disease is to be submitted to the cabinet by the agriculture minister.

However, health minister Rajitha Senaratne and MP Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera insist that the ban should not be lifted.

President promised to extend it by one yr. – Rathana Thera

The latter said that the president has promised him at a meeting to continue with the ban for another year.

The Thera will hold a media briefing on the matter tomorrow (26) at the Strategic Enterprise Management Agency.

He said minister Susil Premajayantha too, supported the glyphosate ban.

Meanwhile, plantation minister Navin Dissasnayake says the glyphosate matter would be submitted to the national economic council headed by the president.

The NEC will take a decision in consideration of the expert recommendations, said the minister.
