Wijedasa maintains claim about Lankans in IS Featured

Minister Wijedasa Rajapakse is adamant with his assertion that 32 Sri Lankans had joined the IS, and says he is going by the information he has.

Soon after Rajapakse first made the claim in parliament, cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne told the media that both the president and the Security Council had confirmed not receiving any report to that effect.

However, at a media briefing at the Government Information Department today (05), Rajapakse maintained his stance, and said the president and the cabinet spokesman should be asked if they said otherwise.

He went onto say that the president would chair a meeting of religious leaders tomorrow to discuss the prevailing unrest due to extremist groups.

IGP & ‘sir’

Answering another question, minister Rajapakse admitted it was a serious matter for concern that IGP Pujith Jayasundara had given a promise to a person whom he referred to as ‘sir’ in a controversial telephone conversation recently.

The constitutional council will look into the matter and make a decision, BBC Sandeshaya quoted him as saying.
