The JVP is due to submit a proposal for a constitutional amendment to abolish the position.
That will need a two-third majority passage in parliament, which means the support of the 54 JO MPs is crucial.
Ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa and JO leaders have discussed the JVP proposal and decided to support the amendment only if a general election follows.
The joint opposition is to lay down a condition for an immediate dissolution of parliament to support an abolition of the executive presidency.
