The 16 MPs who voted against the recent No-Faith Motion moved against the PM, have been informally referred to as the ‘Group of 16’ since then, among political circles.
Former presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa as well as Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga function as senior advisors of the SLFP CC.
Speaking at the SLFP CC meeting on April 09, Ms. Kumaratunga had strongly objected to a suggestion by Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, who is one of the 16 MPs. Yapa had stated that the SLFP should resign from the ministerial portfolios and leave the government.

Meanwhile, speaking to 'Divaina' newspaper, MP Kumara Welgama had stated that he will definitely attend the SLFP CC meeting if he is invited.
Noting it was reported that the ‘Group of 16’ would be crossing over to the opposition, Welgama said that they would be welcomed with open arms.
