8,422 smartphones stolen in last two months

In the first two months of this year, 8,422 smartphones have been either stolen or lost in Sri Lanka, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) said.

The Sri Lanka Police introduced an online system from December 31, 2018 to recover lost phones.

The total number of complaints referred to the TRCSL through this system is 134,451.

In 2019, 40,167 phones have been either stolen or lost, 12,567 phones in 2020 and 27,933 in 2021.

TRCSL Director (Public Complaints) Menaka Pathirana told the media that there are no reports at the TRCSL regarding the recovery of lost phones and the reports about these phones are forwarded to the police stations where the complaints were made at.
