850 railway bridges in dilapidated state

Around 850 railway bridges, including the famous Demodara nine-arch bridge, are in a dilapidated state, a senior official of the Railways Department said.

The official said that 850 bridges or more than 50 per cent of the 1,375 bridges situated along the 1,500-kilometer railway line are dilapidated.

He further said that these 850 bridges include many ancient bridges and a lower speed limit has been introduced for trains when running over these bridges to prevent further destruction.
